Girls, Engineering, and Mentorship (GEM) Club provides an opportunity for girls to experience the excitement of science, engineering, and math through fun and interactive hands-on activities and challenges. Participants will develop problem-solving and practical skills required to be successful in engineering and science. GEM Club will also feature visits from experts in science and engineering fields and tours of laboratories on campus when applicable.
Fall 2017 Themes
GEM Grades 3 to 5
GEM Club theme will be CSI. During this semester, participants will learn the science behind investigation and work together and independently to solve a mystery!
GEM Grades 6 to 9
The fall semester’s Grades 6-9 Girls Engineering and Mentorship Club’s theme will be Women in Science. Each week, participants will learn about a pivotal woman in the history of science, technology, engineering, and/or math, and her contributions to the field. The hands-on activity for the day will be based on the work of this famous female!
Girls Coding Club
Girls Coding Club (GCC) provides an opportunity for girls to explore the world of computer programming. GCC participants will engage in hands-on activities and projects with various software, hardware, and computer programming languages. Previous coding experience is not necessary, as participants will build on coding fundamentals throughout the program. University students will provide one-on-one mentorship, and facilitate visits by computing science experts.
Fall 2017 Themes
GCC Grades 3 to 5
Girls Coding Club will be exploring the world of game design through a series of hands-on projects. The participants will be starting with the game tool Scratch before moving onto more advanced coding concepts!
GCC Grades 6 to 9
Girls Coding Club will be learning all about Robotics. They will have a chance to work in an team and individually to solve a series of challenges using Lego Mindstorms. Through the semester they will also have a chance to learn about the future of robotics and explore more advanced technologies.
Clubs run from October 7th until December 2nd, inclusive.

Club meetings are coordinated by DiscoverE staff and delivered by female volunteers who are currently studying engineering, science, computer science, or education at the University of Alberta.The clubs meet for 3 hours on nine consecutive Saturdays in the Engineering Teaching and Learning Complex (ETLC) at the University of Alberta. Parents are invited for an open house on the last session! For girls that would like to participate in both clubs, lunch time supervision will be provided. All of our clubs will showcase projects and programs that your children will not have seen in past DiscoverE camps or clubs. Each club has a registration cost of $100.00 (parking pass and GST included). We also offer bursaries for those who need them. Click here for more information on bursaries.
